We all change over time and when we look back, we often laugh or scowl at our own choices of clothes, makeup, music, and hairstyles. Trends come and go, and it’s impossible to keep up with them all the time, yet our personal styles are a bit more permanent than that. Even so, we often find ourselves in a situation when we have to adapt and change our personal style for various reasons, and if you’ve ever wondered how you can stay true to yourself while still making some changes to your personal style, read on.
Start from scratch
The easiest way to find yourself and your personal style is to build one from scratch, this means foregoing some of the quirkier pieces you own and building your wardrobe from a few basic pieces and working with a neutral color palette. Make sure your pants and shirts are single-colored, pants can be darker and shirts lighter, and when it comes to color palettes, remember that white, black, gray, and navy will never be out of style and look great when you add simple details in bright colors such as scarves, bags, and jewelry.
Be inspired by great values
It might seem like a good plan to turn to celebrities and various influencers in search of inspiration, but you’ll do better if you ignore Kim, Kendall, Gigi, and Gaga. Instead, try to look for small brands and designers, and find inspiration in ideas and values that speak to you. Find cruelty-free, environmentally friendly and sustainable products and brands, and small designers who aren’t afraid to speak their mind. When you search for like-minded people, you’ll likely find inspiration in their style too.
Adapting: Corporate Goth
When you already know that a certain style fits you best, you might still think that adapting it is a good idea. As much as you like being full-on Goth, going to work with heavy makeup and steampunk clothes might not be such a good idea. Getting a tattoo and a piercing doesn’t mean that you’re unfit for office jobs, it just means that you should try to adapt it a bit while still staying true to yourself. You can wear scarves that have small, intricate prints that you love, wear dark clothes and makeup, and keep your high heels without compromising your professional appearance. Make sure you use a good tattoo cream which can take your pain away, formulated by pharmacist so you avoid any allergic reactions.
Adapting: Badass ballerina
If you feel like your style is gentle and feminine, but still like to appear fierce and strong from time to time, why not try to blend these two and create something new? Keep your hair up in a bun but French braid a part of your hair.
Wear as many earrings as you like but keep them discreet and delicate: pearls and zirconia, and paint your nails as dark as you’d like and add glittery stickers. Combine studs and fluffy details, wear your nails very long and color them in pastel shades, braid your hair and decorate it with pearly hairpins… Feel free to be as gentle and as fierce as you’d like, and don’t be afraid to combine elements of both styles that you feel reflect who you are.
Many would argue that personal style is more important than fashion, and we would have to agree. Your personal style will help you leave a good first impression, and when you feel comfortable in your own skin, you will feel confident every single day no matter what you’re wearing. The right wardrobe will help you achieve that, but more importantly, your ability to improvise and adapt your style will help you stand out from others no matter where you are.
